What is Reflexology ?

Reflexology and Reflex Zone Therapy are types of foot and hand massage, but may also include reflex points on any other part of the body where appropriate. Certain areas of the body have a direct connection with other parts ( i.e. they are "reflexes" ). It is possible to work indirectly, and sometimes more effectively, on a "reflex" rather than the original site of the problem. If a reflex is painful, this does not mean there is a physical problem - more that there is a restriction in the flow of energy in the feet at that point. This may be related to a physical complaint, or (more usually) may simply be a temporary energy imbalance which will clear up as the series of reflexology treatments progress.

Zone Therapy (the original form of reflexology) was practiced in China, Ancient Egypt, and amongst the North American Indians, and is related to (but not the same as) acupuncture. It was in use in several parts of Europe (notably Austria} in the last century, possibly as a form of folk medicine. It was noticed by an American doctor ( Dr. Fitzgerald) whilst he was in Europe, and so re-introduced to the USA. Initially used as a form of local anaesthetic, it has been developed to be a comprehensive form of treatment, effective in a surprisingly wide variety of illnesses.

Reflexology works best by helping all functions of the body to become more balanced. This activates the body's powerful self-repair system, and can create a deep sense of relaxation. Consequently, individual reflexes are only worked as part of a total treatment. Reflexology has helped thousands of people to recover from health problems which do not normally respond well to conventional medicine. (excerpt: School Of Reflexology, 05/06/1995)

The above text is part of the original coursework from my studies, and is just a general explanation of some of the simpler parts of Reflexology.

Now to repeat some of what I have quoted above, but also to try and give a different perspective:

Reflexology is used as an alternative or additional therapy. Reflexology is based upon the same principles as Chinese acupuncture. Pressure-point massage of the feet was used in China over 5.000 years ago, as well as by the Ancient Egyptians and european medical practitioners as far back as the 16th century. Reflexology is based on the theory that every organ, area and system of the body is mirrored by a reflex point in the feet or hands. By massaging these points in the feet and hands I can observe and facilitate a clearing of any blockages in the corresponding areas of the body.

Due to the holistic approach, reflexology can be useful in treatment of conditions such as migraine, eczema, asthma, insomnia, low energy levels and stress, as well as being a treatment that relaxes and promotes good health and vitality.

There are a variety of points on the feet and hands which correspond to your organs, nervous system and other parts of the body. These connections are called reflexes.

With many minor illnesses the body is in a state of imbalance and vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively. Often this is caused through tension or stress.

By working on these reflex points on sensitive feet or hands I can detect these imbalances within you. Your nerve endings are stimulated, increasing the blood supply throughout your body.

The treatment consists of a massage of the feet or hands usually with my thumbs. Even though your feet may be ticklish, with the firm pressures applied very few people find any discomfort. Many people have even been know to have a brief nap during treatment and wake to feel completely relaxed and refreshed.

Reflexology has been known to help:

  • Sleep Problems
  • Back Pain
  • Physical Injuries
  • Arthritis and Rheumatism
  • Digestive Disorders
  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Fertility Problems

Amongst many other ailments.

What Reflexology will and will not do

It Will NOT......

  • make you totally healthy all the time, or help all people
  • prevent you having to visit the doctor
  • create perfect health after a couple of treatments
  • replace prescribed pharmaceutical medicines

It Will....

Due to new regulations I should probably say " It May, however as i was saying, it will"

  • reduce the frequency of illness
  • create a general sense of well being
  • improve vitality
  • improve the ability of your body to self repair, from both illness and accident
  • improve the working of the immune system
  • help the body to remove toxins, and to cleanse itself ( increase in eliminatory functions )
  • improve blood and lymph flow
  • help most people, if given sufficient time to have a lasting effect
  • promote more rapid recovery from illness
  • assist relaxation, by teaching the body how to relax
  • resolve many problems which do not respond well to "orthodox" medicine

Due to new regulations I should probably say " It May"

Now Steve, the person that designed and helped me with this site asked me " How come you have given me five times as much information about reflexology as you have about the other treatments and aids that you can give people"

I said to him " that as much as all treatments from a Holistic Massage, through to full blown aromatherapy course give obvious benefits to people, that reflexology is based upon a pure physical science. Through my years of experience I have found that people tend to start noticing the real benefits after the first or second treatment."

Just to explain a little bit more:

Reflexology is an extremely natural treatment requiring no external factors.

  1. Working on the reflexes in the feet, it is possible to detect imbalances in the energy zones
  2. By working on these imbalances, it is possible to increase the flow of energy, therefore improving the condition
  3. There is an increase in circulation to the corresponding part of the body, beneficial by bringing nutrients and removing accumulated waste products
  4. All the elimination systems are activated to work more efficiently
  5. Sometimes crystalline deposits may form, they may be broken down with pressure.
  • Reflexology heals by:-

Increasing energy flow in the zone.

Increasing circulation.

Increasing elimination.

Hand Reflexology.

The hand, although often less used in reflexology than the feet is another great way of applying certain benefits.

One of the obvious uses of hand reflexology is where the customer may be extremely ticklish on the feet, this way hand reflexology can be applied for a multitude of benefits.
